Technique
Gesso and ground pumice are mixed together and applied to panel, next acrylic paint, charcoal and pencil are applied with water. This process is repeated numerous times until the desired effect is achieved. Once dry oil paint is then applied in thin layers to tie the piece together. In the next step I use a two part liquid resin with a torch to create layers, in between each of the layers of resin is paint and/or metal leaf.
About the Art
With my art, I’m working to bring the viewer inside the painting. While traditional paintings of the figure offer the viewer only one view or perspective of the moment, my paintings are exploring the 360-degree experience inside the human form in movement.
“Through multiple angles, different perspectives and imposed layers shown all at once I am working to capture the true passion of the human form.”
About the Artist
Texas contemporary artist Sam Jones IV expresses himself in a variety of media, including acrylic and oil on canvas; pencil, charcoal, pastel and acrylic on paper. As an artist his passion for dance and music is vividly depicted in his pieces.
Sam was born on December 18th, 1970 in Houston, Texas. From a very early age he demonstrated interest in drawing. He has studied and created art since early childhood when his paintings were influenced by vacations to New Mexico. Brightly covered canvases of adobes and detailed drawings of Native American Indians were representative of his early work. By early adulthood his work began to explore his surroundings and by his mid-twenty’s he was working with acrylic paint and pastel to create highly detailed paintings of churches and buildings. While working with pastels Sam discovered the effective use of texture. After applying texture to canvas and seeing how the paint moved through the surface in random patterns he began studying movement in art. For the next several years he painted many subjects, while diligently working to develop his personal style of painting. His new style of painting along with the Spanish influenced music and cultures of living in Texas lead him to paint his first dance painting. The series entitled “Dancer’s in the Paint” would soon follow.
Jones has evolved as a painter. He currently works as a full-time artist in Jonesboro Arkansas.
Sam's artwork adopts many forms and styles. His work has indeed found its niche and its own voice. This is most evident in his use of exuberant colors and his powerful black and whites inspired by his boundless passion towards the movement of dance.
Sam's work can be found in collections in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
